The Wisconsin rallies: our side is so much more fun

OK, this is supposed to be a blog for my wedding photography business, but it's winter in Wisconsin, which means.... no weddings. I've been putting my camera to good use, though, during the recent protests against Governor Walker's budget proposals.

If you're wondering why teachers, firefighters, doctors, nurses, police officers, state workers, tradespeople, retirees, and even small businesspeople like me are so fired up about this, please read this excellent article from the Washington Times. It gives a good overview of the issues and the consequences we face if this budget goes through.

But enough preaching. On with the photos!

One thing that's been really upsetting is that Governor Walker is never around to see the protesters who gather at the Capitol. We've been up there almost every day for the past three weeks, but we've never seen him. Anna wondered where he was, so she started work on a "Where's Walker" sign about a week ago (a spoof on the "Where's Waldo" books).

Anna with her sign at the rally -- it's incredibly detailed. Can you see Governor Walker? (hint: he's certainly not down among the people!)

I had to use the macro lens to get shots of the details. My husband, Eric, and I are on there, along with my mom. My mom is a retired teacher and her sign says "Peaceful but determined."

She did a great job capturing all the "characters" that show up day after day... one guy dresses up in a toga made out of candy necklaces (yes, that's true) and carries a sign that says "Scott Walker looks more ridiculous than I do." And of course there's someone delivering free pizza!

I love the police officer standing in the background. He's on duty, so he can't carry a sign, but he's smiling right along with the crowd :-)

And there's Governor Walker! He's hiding out waaaay up in his office, closing his eyes and plugging his ears!

I love this! I hope more people realize that this is a moral struggle!

Things that are irrational....

hahaha

A kid signs a giant wooden peace sign that was set up near Lady Forward.

John Nichols gets the crowd fired up.

And Michael Moore delivered a great speech (really!)

I hope to see you out at the Capitol sometime soon!
